Thermography

Testing of the Thermal Insulation and Airtightness of Buildings

Author: Bertil Petterson, Bengt Axén

This publication discusses the usability and relilbility of the method of thermography in investigations of the thermal insulation and airtightness performance of buildings. Rules for the interpretation and application of thermograms are given.

The usability and reliability of the method have been verified in a large number of investigations carried out over the period 1972-1976. By describing a large number of practical cases, the publication provides a comprehensive basis for the assessment of the thermal insulation and airtightness of buildings. Owing to new requirements relating, inter alia, to economic use of energy in buildings, the method has been applied very extensively.

The theoretical conditions have been evaluated by the Swedish National Testing Institute. Field investigrtions in completed buildings have been carried out jointly by the Swedish National Testing Institute and the Co-operative Building Organization of the Swedish Trade Unions. The results given strongly emphasize the importance of careful workmanship, choice of materials and type of construction. The differences found between intended and actual standard of construction show the importance of a properly organized checking and resting activity.

Thermography is a qualitative method and does not provide any direct values of the amounts of air moving through points of air leakage. The method comprises stages where judgment must be exercised. and this demands that the staff engaged on the measurements should possess special competence. Rules for the grant of authorization have been drawn up by the Swedish National Testing Institute, which invites companies engaged on thermography to become authorized test sites for purposes of thermography in buildings. The object of this publication is that it should be a useful basis for the application of the method of thermography, and should be instrumental in increasing the knowledge concerning the insulation and airtighrness performance of buildings.
